- Rough milled lumber is sold in units of 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 & 8/4.
4/4=1", 5/4=1 1/4", 6/4= 1/1/2", & 8/4=2"
rough thickness.
- Board foot (bf) is a unit of measure one foot long, one foot wide
and one inch thick, or the equivalent. In surfaced lumber, the
board foot is taken from the lumber before surfacing. You can
use the chart below to figure out the amount of board feet needed.
For 4/4: width (inches) x length (feet) divided by 12
For 5/4: width (inches) x length (feet) divided by 9.5
For 6/4: width (inches) x length (feet) divided by 8
For 8/4: width (inches) x length (feet) divided by 6
- Kiln Dried is the process of taking moisture out of boards thus
increasing the stability of the wood. Adirondack Hardwoods' lumber
is dried to a nominal 7% to 9% moisture content.
- Random Widths & Lengths refers to the variation in widths, always
measured in inches, and lengths, always measured in feet.
- Rough Lumber is wood as it comes from the sawmill, unplaned
S2S is lumber planed smooth on two sides
